International Collaboration of Orthopaedic Nursing
(ICON)

 History
The International Alliance of Orthopaedic Nursing Associations emerged early in 2000 from a series of Internet discussions among the leaders of three national associations of orthopaedic nursing.

Sheila Kelly, President of the Canadian Orthopaedic Nurses Association (CONA); Julie Stone, Chair of the Royal College of Nursing/Society of Orthopaedic and Trauma Nursing; and Anita Meehan, President of NAON. The first conversation focused on exploring interest in the opportunity for the respective organizations to support a shared vision of the future of orthopaedic nursing.
Since that time the member organisations have met at least anually on both sides of the Atlantic and in September 2004, for practical reasons, the alliance was renamed the "International Collaboration of Orthopaedic Nursing" (ICON)
 Member organisations now include:
  • Asian Association for Dynamic Osteosynthesis (Nursing)
  • Canadian Orthopaedic Nurses Association
  • NAON (National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses (USA)
  • RCN Society of Orthopaedic and Trauma Nursing (UK)
The International collaboaration was created for the purpose of advancing the practice of orthopaedic nursing globally.

 Vision
A future in which orthopaedic nurses will be responsible for the universal application of the highest standards of orthopaedic nursing practice and care.

 Mission
To advance the quality of musculoskeletal care internationally by facilitating the sharing of ideas and collaboration in the areas of orthopaedic nursing research, education, and practice.
The strategies that we identified for accomplishing this mission are:
  • improving communication among respective counterparts including journal/newsletter editors, research leaders, education leaders, and practice leaders.
  • celebrating International Orthopaedic Nurses Day on October 30.
  • continue ongoing e-mail communications to discuss new ideas.
  • providing time at our respective conferences to report to the membership on the work of the Alliance.
