After the war Scotland formed an Orthopaedic Nurses Group, which by the early 1950s had become
the British Association of Orthopaedic Nurses (BAON). The RCN Society of Orthopaedic Nursing was formed when the BAON agreed to become an
RCN Forum in 1987. A decision by members in 2001 saw the Society change its name to include trauma.
The Society today is representative of orthopaedic nurses throughout the UK, following in the strong tradition of the BAON.
It hosts an annual national conference, in addition to national seminars each spring and autumn, and has a strong network of local groups
and special interest groups. An international conference is also held every three years.
The Society's philosophy is to promote and develop the art and science of orthopaedic nursing in order to provide the highest standards of
care for patients with orthopaedic conditions or injuries. The Society aims to:
- Contribute to and influence the debate on the future of orthopaedic nursing
- Promote the education and training of nurses providing orthopaedic care
- Act as an informed and expert resource
- Raise awareness about the health promoting aspects of orthopaedic care, such as advice on falls and osteoporosis prevention
The Society’s current work includes:
- developing a competency framework for Orthopaedic Nursing;
- establishing an osteoporosis prevention teaching programme in schools
- ensuring education for all those working in the field of casting
The Society's newsletter, Bare Bones, keeps members updated with the current affairs of the Society
and the Journal of Orthopaedic Nursing has been adopted as its professional journal.
The Society has extensive links with external bodies at national and international level, and is a founder member
of the International Alliance, a partnership between orthopaedic nursing associations in the UK, USA and Canada.
